The Seafarers (1953), Stanley Kubrick

Less an actual documentary than a promotional piece for the Seafarers International Union, THE SEAFARERS hides in plain sight its status as Stanley Kubrick’s first color film. Lost for several years and long-unavailable, THE SEAFARERS never strays far from its commissioned message of the joys of maritime work (not to mention the ease and stability of employment provided by the SIU); as such, there is little evidence of the groundbreaking work Kubrick would be later known for (except for one long, steady take of the SIU’s busy cafeteria). – Tom Fritsche
